Going local

The last day of the conference started once more with amazing weather as you can see in this image of the view from the conference venue onto the endless Lake Michigan. (as on all days except Wednesday it actually stayed dry, although we had flood warnings for the last few days)20170714_073733

As our time in Chicago is slowly coming to an end, we decided to get some local dishes at a nearby “Chicago-Italian” restaurant. The main local food they are really proud of is the deep-dish pizza, however since the waiting time is rather long (45 minutes), we first got another speciality: French fries with Parmesan cheese and French dressing. And it was actually much better than expected!20170714_155936

As our appetite started to shrink from eating French fries and waiting for about 35 minutes, the main course finally arrived: A Chicago classic deep dish pizza, including meat, although that was not listed on the menu. As you can see, it is basically a cake, filled with approximatelly 500g of mozzarella, peppered with sausage and vegetables such as mushrooms and green pepper and covered by tomato sauce. The portion you can see on the image below is intended for 2 people. However, after Nino had his first slice he had to capitulate, while Svenja actually managed to eat two pieces. The rest was packed, so we had some midnight snack at the hotel.20170714_163415

Literally stuffed, we went back to the hotel, where we met a local artist from a nearby city. As we already knew him from the internet, he proposed to visit us, so we ended up at our hotel bar, discussing, getting a lot of insider information about Chicago and sketching till midnight.20170714_200348
